What to Expect on the Day
Check in at Waikiki or Kewalo Basin
Meet your crew at Waikiki Beach or Kewalo Basin harbor in Honolulu, about 10 minutes from most Waikiki hotels.
Arrive 15 minutes early and wear your swimsuit under your clothes.Short boat ride to Turtle Canyon
Cruise out to Turtle Canyon, a shallow reef off Waikiki where honu gather to feed and visit reef cleaning stations.
Snorkel safety briefing & gear
The crew fits you with mask, snorkel, fins and a flotation vest, and explains how to stay a respectful distance from the turtles.
Swim with the turtles
Slip into the water and float above green sea turtles gliding over the reef. Guides point out turtles and keep the group calm.
Relax on the ride back
Dry off with snacks or drinks (on tours that include them) as you cruise back to Waikiki along the Honolulu coastline.
Sea Turtle Behaviors to Watch For
Green turtles are reptiles and must come up for air, from every few minutes to about an hour. Never crowd the surface above a turtle or block its way up.
Honu feed on algae and seagrass along the reef. That plant diet turns their body fat green and gives the green sea turtle its name.
Turtles hover over reef 'cleaning stations' where fish like tangs nibble algae off their shells and skin. One of the best moments to watch, from a distance.
Oahu is one of few places where honu haul out to bask on the beach, most often at Laniakea on the North Shore. View from behind the ropes, at least 10 feet back.
