What to Expect on the Day
Check in at the harbor
Most South Maui boats leave from Ma'alaea Harbor or Kihei; West Maui trips launch off Ka'anapali Beach. Kayak tours meet near Makena.
Book a morning departure. South Maui water is calmest and clearest before the afternoon wind.Cruise to the reef
Sail out to Turtle Town off Makena, or on combo trips to the Molokini crater first for its clear water and fish.
Snorkel briefing and gear
The crew fits you with mask, snorkel, fins and a flotation vest, and explains how to keep a safe distance from the honu.
Swim with the turtles
Float over the lava-rock reef where green turtles rest and visit cleaning stations, with a guide pointing them out.
Relax on the sail back
Enjoy breakfast, a buffet or BBQ lunch and drinks on the cruise back, depending on the tour.
Sea Turtle Behaviors to Watch For
Turtle Town is named for its cleaning stations, where honu hover over the reef while tangs and other fish pick algae from their shells and skin. The best moment to watch, from a distance.
Green turtles crop the algae (limu) that grows on the lava rock, which is what turns their body fat green and gives the species its name.
Turtles rise for air every few minutes to about an hour. Give them a clear path to the surface and never crowd the space above one.
On Maui's north shore at Ho'okipa, honu haul out to bask on the sand in the afternoon. View them from behind the ropes, at least 10 feet back.
